Hourly rate calculator for tutors and teachers
Work out what to charge per lesson: from your living budget, hours sold, tax and margin. Prep, marking and cancellations count too. No sign-up.
Three mistakes that pull your income down
1. Prep left out of the price. If a lesson takes half an hour of prep and half an hour of marking, the paid hour really lasts two. The lesson rate has to cover that.
2. Cancellations with no rules. A lesson cancelled an hour before can't be sold to another student. Agree up front how much notice a free cancellation needs.
3. A year without the summer dip. If you count twelve full months, the summer will run short. Add the holidays to the field for months without work.
A lesson lasts an hour, but holds more work
Behind an hour-long lesson are prep, finding materials, marking homework and messages with students or parents. Usually only the lesson itself gets paid.
Two more: cancellations and the season. A student cancels the day before and the hour is gone. In summer and over the holidays there are fewer students, but you still need to live all year.
Enter in the calculator how many months a year are really fully booked, and your share of unpaid time — the lesson rate will cover the rest.
Working out your rate is half the job
The calculator tells you what to charge. The timer shows what you actually get: how many hours you worked today, how many of them are paid, and how much is left until your daily target.
A rate without tracked hours is a promise to yourself that nobody checks.
Five of your numbers, not someone else's median
Going by someone else's rate makes no sense: it's built from someone else's life — another city, another tax, another share of paid hours. Yours comes from five numbers, and all of them are about you.
Common questions
How much does a tutor earn?
As much as they sold hours at their rate, minus costs and tax. Two tutors can differ several times over: because of hours, costs and clients. So it's more useful to work out your own rate than to look for someone else's. More in what others earn.
How do I turn an hourly rate into a lesson price?
Add up all the hours one lesson takes: prep, the lesson, marking, travel. Multiply by the rate from the calculator — that's the lesson price.
How do I price a package of lessons?
A package is a fixed price for several lessons. Check it against your rate: hours of all lessons with prep × rate. If the package is discounted, the discount comes out of your margin.
Should online lessons cost less?
Online there's no travel, so a lesson takes fewer hours. The hourly rate stays the same — only the number of hours behind the lesson changes.
